Jalandhar (Punjabi Gurmukhi: ਜਲੰਧਰ), formerly Jullundur, is a city in the Doaba region of northwestern India state of Punjab. Jalandhar is the oldest city in Punjab and has seen rapid urbanisation, developing into a highly industrialised centre of commercial activity.

 

Jalandhar was the capital of Punjab from India’s independence until Chandigarh was built in 1953. According to history, the city is named after the Daitya king Jalandhara who according to the Padma became so powerful by virtue of his austerities as to be invincible. Jalandhar has recently been selected in the third list of 27 Smart Cities and is set to be the first sports city of the country.

 

Jalandhar has been selected to be developed as Smart City under the Centre’s flagship scheme. The city would be developed into a sports hub under the central government’s ‘Smart Cities Mission’. Jalandhar is set to be the first sports city of the country.

Devi Talab Mandir

Devi Talab Mandir is a Hindu Mandir located in Jalandhar, Punjab, India. The temple is devoted to Goddess Durga and is visited by thousands of pilgrims every year. It is regarded as one of the 51 Shakti Pithas in India.

A model of the Amarnath Temple, dedicated to God Shiva, is located within the temple complex. There is an old temple dedicated to Goddess Kali located next to the Mandir. One of the main attractions of the temple is an ancient tank that holds great religious significance for Hindu devotees. The temple has intricate gold work both inside and on its top.
